(personal project, ongoing)
I grew up
in the far north of Norway. As an adult, I became aware of the preconceived
notions people have about the area where I grew up, that is, how many
romanticise it, believing it to be untouched and pristine, a place apart where society and nature are seamlessly interwoven. A place synonymous with
tranquility, isolation and distance.
However,
this part of Norway is, in fact, far more complex than that. People's lives,
experiences and perceptions of the area vary greatly. In the same way, the
surroundings are in constant flux. At one moment, the sun never sets, then the
next, the darkness is all-encompassing. The High North both attracts and
repels, offering a life that some people want to escape, while others seek it
out.
